My recent work falls into two camps, full color paintings and monochromatic paintings based on film-stills. I find it helpful to work on the two concurrently as it allows me to vary from working expressively to a time-intensive, polished technique.

In each I utilize appropriated sources and explore the combination of different styles of representation. In the film-stills, I leverage representational areas against abstractly painted passages reflecting the focus of my aesthetic and conceptual interests. The color paintings involve “remixing” elements from various sources such as art history, animation and religious imagery. For example, in The Woods, the figures from a Van Der Weyden altarpiece find themselves in a forest scene inspired by The Simpsons.

In my latest work I develop the background in dense acrylic paint. The figures are then modeled in monochrome oil with numerous glazes on top. These shiny areas create a shift from the matte surface of the background heightening the visual and conceptual juxtaposition of figures and their environment.
